                            Second Grade Grading Scale

We are excited about having your child in the second grade.   Students have learned in the previous grade the importance of neatness and correct formation of letters and numbers when writing and completing math tasks.  Each teacher will have high expectations of their students and will emphasize the correct way to write names, letters, words, sentences, numbers as well as completing coloring and pasting projects.  Students will be reminded of the expectations set by their teacher and should be writing and completing projects neatly with as few mistakes as possible, therefore deductions and grading procedures will be enforced.

The following are grading procedures and deductions taken by second grade teachers during the year:

*No name: 5 points each will be deducted from total grade

*Backward letters and numbers:  The entire word or problem is counted wrong and a full deduction will occur according to the number of items on the assignment.

*Sloppy work including handwriting, pasting, extra markings, or coloring: 5 point deduction from total grade. Student may be required to redo assignment if work in unable to be read. (Students should not color all projects one color, scribble outside of lines, or have extra markings on paper.  Cutting and pasting should also be neat or full deduction will occur.) (Students receiving OT are not deducted unless specified by the parent and teacher.)

*Correct Formation:  Tall letters (b,d,f,h,k,l,t) must be taller than accompanied letters, small letters (a,c,e,i,m,n,o,r,s,u,v,w,x,z) must be small, monkey letters (g,j,p,q,y) must hang below accompanied letters or a 1 point deduction will occur for each incorrectly formed letter.

*Symbols:  There will be a 2 point deduction for leaving off or incorrect math symbols such as cent signs, hyphens within date, etc…

*Daily Work and Exams: Misspelling of previously taught spelling words, sight words, and vocabulary words will be counted wrong (including leaving off endings or leaving out 1 letter). 

*Reading Comprehension Passages-Misspelling of words that are found in the passage may be counted wrong. (Teacher will use his/her discretion.)

*Capitalization and Punctuation:  There will be a 2 point deduction for each sentence that does not begin with a capital letter as well as proper nouns that are not capitalized.  There will be a 2 point deduction for each incorrect or missing punctuation. (.!?)

*Spacing:  There will be a 2 point deduction for missing spaces between words. (For example, Thedog is here. –2)

Teachers will continue to remind students of these procedures each day in class.  Please help your child by enforcing these guidelines on any work they complete at home.
